Cieltje Van Achter wants a blind spot system on STIB-MIVB buses
Enquiries by Brussels MP Cieltje Van Achter reveal that STIB-MIVB buses are not equipped with a blind spot detection system. She is calling for the immediate introduction of a blind spot detection system on the buses of the public transport company.
In contrast to trucks, buses are not required to be equipped with a blind spot system. The fact that STIB-MIVB buses do not have blind spot detection systems is therefore not illegal in itself, but such a system is highly recommended. After all, recent figures show that the number of road deaths in Brussels tripled in 2022. Especially in an urban context – with a large presence of pedestrians and people on bicycles and scooters – a detection system is thus an absolute must.
Only logical
That is why Van Achter does not understand why the existing bus fleet is not equipped with a blind spot detection system. “Has that not been included in any tender at all so far? It seems only logical to introduce this safety measure immediately, especially now that we are seeing ever more Brussels residents using bicycles or scooters. The sooner STIB-MIVB starts working on this, the more accidents can be prevented,” Cieltje Van Achter concludes.
