Catalonia referendum: “No à la carte European human rights”

L’Espagne boycotte la mission de commerce de la Flandre et de la Catalogne

Spain is deploying its Guardia Civil against the Catalan Government. The Spanish military police is currently carrying out multiple campaigns in various Catalan ministries, including the Ministries of Finance, Economy, Taxation and Social Affairs.

The Spanish Government is thus carrying out a de facto deployment of the army in order to maintain Spanish unity. Member of Parliament Peter Luykx, Member of the European Parliament Mark Demesmaeker and Member of the Flemish Parliament Jan Van Esbroeck express their profound concern about the escalating developments and condemn the arrests and violence in the strongest possible terms: “The boundaries of what is acceptable are being trampled every day by Madrid. After political persecutions and violations of all kinds of freedoms, today’s events are the straw that breaks the camel’s back. This is an outright attack on the human rights of all Catalan citizens.”

European policy of turning a blind eye

Moreover, it beggars belief that these actions can take place without reprisals in a European Member State in 2017. The MPs reject Europe’s policy of turning a blind eye. “There is no place for à la carte human rights in Europe. We declare our support for the Catalan Government,” they confirm.
