Bulgaria and Romania not ready for accession to Schengen

18 May 2011

Bulgaria and Romania are not ready for accession to Schengen. This is the view of the N-VA, which makes reference to a Europol report. That report states that accession to Schengen, due to the flawed justice system in both countries, plays into the hands of criminal gangs from the Balkans. Already, a large proportion of the cocaine in Belgium enters Europe via the Balkans. If Bulgaria and Romania accede to the Schengen agreement, it will become easier for criminal organisations to serve the Schengen area. Illegal immigration, too, will increase. The lion’s share of illegal immigrants currently enter the EU via the Greek-Turkish border. Many illegal immigrants will try to reach Europe from Turkey via the Black Sea if Bulgaria and Romania join the Schengen area.
