Belgian government negotiations must increase momentum

11 May 2011

On Sunday 1 May, N-VA Chairman Bart De Wever called for negotiations on the formation of a new federal government to gain momentum. Indeed, if talks continue at their present pace, we will never reach an agreement. At the same time Bart De Wever has made it perfectly clear that under no circumstances does he want new elections. For the N-VA it is obvious that either PS President Elio Di Rupo or N-VA President Bart De Wever must retake control of the negotiations. It is thus best to round off the current phase as quickly as possible.

The two election winners must also choose the parties with which they want to form a government. As long as there are nine parties around the table, a number of which are mathematically superfluous, mutual distrust between the parties will continue and it will be impossible for them to reach an agreement. The N-VA also proposes starting up social-economic negotiations alongside the community talks. This country needs major reforms and must also initiate a far-reaching financial operation. It is also vital that all governments in this country are made financially responsible for their policy choices.
