Bart De Wever: “American democracy has spoken”

“American democracy has spoken, after a particularly unedifying electoral campaign,” N-VA chairman Bart De Wever says in response to the results of the American presidential elections. “It is now our job to deal with this new political reality.”

“The US is the world’s largest economy, the biggest military power and is our historically,” Bart De Wever continues. “This reality must compel responsible politicians to keep their responses moderate. We must wait and see what kind of politics the new president and the American Senate and House will apply.”

No to stimulating isolationism

“It is in our interests to avoid effectively stimulating the US towards isolationism,” Bart De Wever warns. “It is of equal importance that we not contribute to feelings of uncertainty, which would be disastrous for the global economy. Enthusiasm is not a required prerequisite for working towards cordial relations and stability. A sense of responsibility will bring us further than outbursts of emotion.”
