Asylum applications fall to their lowest level since 2022
The number of asylum applications in Belgium continues to decline sharply. In May 2026, 28% fewer applications for international protection were submitted than in the same month last year, bringing the monthly total to its lowest level since 2022. “The figures are even slightly below the most optimistic scenario projected at the start of 2026,” said Minister for Asylum and Migration Anneleen Van Bossuyt.
Over the first five months of 2026, Belgium recorded a drop of nearly 31% compared with the same period in 2025. Across the European Union, the average decline over that period was 17%.
A stricter migration policy is delivering results
Since the start of the current legislative term, the government has introduced a series of measures aimed at preventing abuse, reducing inflows and easing pressure on the reception system.
“These figures show that a firm policy can make a real difference, but they are certainly no reason for complacency. Our asylum and reception services remain under significant pressure. We must therefore continue reforming the system and stay the course,” Minister Anneleen Van Bossuyt said.
Europe is also taking a tougher approach
The shift must now continue at the European level. The EU Pact on Migration and Asylum has entered into force and, according to Minister Anneleen Van Bossuyt, should help strengthen control of the Union’s external borders, speed up procedures and reduce secondary movements within Europe.
“Belgium has shown in recent months that a tougher approach does have a deterrent effect. But migration does not stop at national borders. The pact must ensure that Member States take responsibility, that procedures move faster, and that those who are not entitled to protection are returned more quickly. Only then can we build an asylum system that is sustainable once again,” Anneleen Van Bossuyt concluded.
