The American import levies on steel and aluminium are bad for Flanders. We must avoid a trade conflict with the United States at all costs. MEP Sander Loones is concerned about a possible trade war between Europe and the USA. “We are opting for proper and sensible trade,” he says.

European cooperation

Although the American measures are primarily aimed at China, they also threaten the traditional European allies of the USA. “Trade is the foundation of our European joint cooperation. We must make it clear that we do not want a trade war that upsets that cooperation,” Sander Loones warns.

Damage for Flanders

The announced import measures are bad for everyone. Sander Loones clarifies: “The levies will damage US industry, the European economy and world trade in general. They are also bad for the Flemish economy, which is already under intense pressure as a result of Brexit.”
