Agreement on nuclear power stations: “A mini extension with a huge bill for taxpayers”

The federal government and Engie have finally concluded an agreement on the extension of the two newest nuclear reactors. MP Bert Wollants says it is still insufficient: “This is a mini-extension, which, moreover, burdens taxpayers with a huge bill.”
Wollants: “Recent reports show that keeping only two nuclear power stations open does not ensure our energy supply sufficiently. The government is playing with our security of supply. In addition, we lose any margin that was left to prevent the closure of other power stations.”
Years of green sabotage
There is also much uncertainty about the cost of disposing of the nuclear waste. “Van der Straeten has been juggling figures between EUR 18 billion and EUR 41 billion for nuclear waste disposal for years, and now she is dropping a figure of EUR 15 billion. That may provide clarity to Engie, which now has its ceiling price, in exchange for yet another letter of intent. However, taxpayers are left to guess the size of the bill they will be burdened with. The price of years of green sabotage,” Bert Wollants concludes.
