The terror level in Belgium has been decreased from three to two. That doesn’t mean that the threat has gone away, but it does mean that attacks are currently less likely. However, the efforts to guarantee the safety of citizens are in no way decreasing. For example, the security services are continuing to remain on an extra-high level of alertness in the case of events and at specific locations.

“In recent years, level three applied to every location where people congregated,” explains Jan Jambon, Minister of Security and the Interior. “Now we are going to look at this on a case-by-case basis. It goes without saying, however, that logic is being applied in this regard. Otherwise we are simply issuing an invitation to the terrorists.”

Better armed against terror

In total, our country applied threat level three for just over two years, following the attacks in Paris in November 2015. Since then, military personnel have been deployed to guarantee the safety of the population. Now that the terror level is decreasing, their presence on the streets will become less prominent. “But thanks to the new safety culture that we have developed, we are better armed than ever against terror,” Minister Jambon concludes.
