Over 5,300 extra jobs thanks to foreign investments

23 January 2018

In 2017, foreign companies invested a total of 2.08 billion euros in 215 projects in Flanders. That is an increase of over 26% compared to 2016. What’s more, the foreign investments are creating 5,377 extra jobs, the highest number in 15 years. “The Flemish and federal governments are doing everything they can to attract even more investments to Flanders in the coming years,” says Minister-President Geert Bourgeois.

Just as in previous years, the USA heads the list of the biggest investors. The USA represents 20% of foreign investments in Flanders. It is followed by our neighbours the Netherlands, Germany and France. There are also two Asian countries in the top 10: China is in fifth place, followed hot on its heels by Japan.

Research & development on the up

Production and logistics remain the major activities of foreign investors in Flanders, but it is above all the increase in the number of jobs in research & development that is so striking. “It’s a consequence of the attractive tax regime for researchers in our region and our focus on the 4th industrial revolution,” Minister-President Geert Bourgeois concludes. “What’s more, companies that invest in research & development are putting down roots in Flanders as a result of their cooperation with our research institutions. This Flemish Government will therefore continue to focus resolutely on this aspect.”
