In future, Europe is making it obligatory to install charging points for electric cars on the occasion of major renovations or the construction of new parking spaces. MEP Anneleen Van Bossuyt, member of the Energy Committee, responds positively: “Citizens often don’t dare to buy electric cars today for fear of running out of juice during their journey. This decision must help them cross that threshold.”

The new rules apply to residential and commercial buildings that have at least ten parking spaces. From now on there will have to be at least one charging point. At 10% of parking spaces, cables must be provided for a future charging point. There are no changes for existing car parks.

Flanders currently has 750 public charging points. The European decision should increase that number significantly. And that’s necessary, because 70% of charging is still done at home today. “The electric car will play a crucial role in our energy system in coming years. It will soon become easier to charge your car either during your journey or while visiting a department store,” Anneleen Van Bossuyt concludes.
