Common sense triumphs: no European constituency

7 February 2018

By a large majority, the European Parliament has shot down the idea of a European constituency. That means that Flemings will not be able to vote for European politicians from a different Member State in 2019. That’s a good thing, the N-VA says: “A European constituency will not eliminate the citizen-representative gap. What can eliminate that gap though, is a powerful policy regarding jobs, security and migration.”

British seats should simply be scrapped

The discussion about a European constituency broke out following the Brexit referendum. What was to be done with those 73 British seats in the European Parliament? For the N-VA in any case, the answer is crystal clear: they simply need to be swept from the table. “Fewer Member States, fewer seats: that’s the only correct choice. Otherwise the EU is squandering taxpayers’ money that can be used very effectively for other purposes. The N-VA believes in a European project, not in one that means more Europe, but one that means a better Europe, closer to the citizen. With today’s vote, a step in the wrong direction has in any case been avoided.”
